Preston Guild 1952: The first post-war guild

Preston's '52 guild was particularly special because it was the first guild after the Second World War.

Preston's 1942 guild had been cancelled due to the war but when the 1952 guild finally came, it was, according to Brian Saul, the man who gave us these excellent photos: '[an] opportunity [...] for people to throw off the repression of World War Two and the rationing which was still in place in 1952'.

These photos show Mr Saul in his youth when he headed St Andrew's church choir in the procession.

I found my brother, Harold Billington, on Brian's photos. The blond on the left! He is in South Africa. My sister and I walked in St,Andrew Youth CLub procession carrying a banner. It was a wonderful day.We, Irene and I, are coming for a few days to see the processions this year. I hope we meet up with old friends and acquaintances. We were the Billingtons of Aldwych Drive, Ashton-on-Ribble.

Lovely to see these photos of the choir in the Guild of 1952 especially as my brother Harold is easily recognisable! I have sent a copy to S. Africa but my sister Olwen and I will be in Preston for the Guild and will be on the flag-market stand for the Trades Procession and the Churches procession and will also be at the Mayors international reception on the Tuesday evening!

Hi, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I'll see if I can let Brian know - I think when I received the photos (by quite a circuitous route) they mentioned that one of the chaps had moved to South Africa - so he is remembered!

Hello to everyone, I have very vivid memories of walking in the Preston Guild, I walked, with St. Matthews Church, while I enjoyed the guild it seemed to be such a long walk, well it would be for a girl of ten years old, I remembered getting lots of money in the bag I was carrying, it was a fantastic experience, my late brother Ronnie was poorly at the time and he was unable to take part, sweet memories, thank you.

My mother was crowned Miss Regent for the 1952 Preston Guild at the former Regent Ball room. I am trying to find out more information and whether anyone is interested in photos of her trophy cup etc - can someone suggest who I should contact
We have lived in Australia since 1963.
