Do you remember Haslam Park baths?

Print

Haslam Park’s open air swimming pool was built in 1932, 20 years after the park was first opened. A Mr J Ward donated the money for the building of the baths. The park’s old aviary was also built with the same money. The baths survived for 50 years, but as the fashion for open air bathing came to an end, Haslam Park’s pool was eventually knocked down.

Now it’s hard to believe there was ever a pool, or an aviary, in Haslam Park.

Yes I remember the Baths spent some time in the pool with friends I remember it to be quite cool in the water! No photo's unfortunatly camera's were a little rare back then.
Also the bird aviery was a popular spot when I lived in Ashton in the 60's
Been in Australia since 1970 but this brought back some great memories for me.

Remember the baths well, freezing cold with a slide at one end just to add excitement to the heart stopping splash into the chilly water. Cast iron turnstiles that as a kid had to shove with all my might. Also remember the posh changing facilities around the pool!
If you stood on the slide in the playground or swung high enough on the swings you could see in! ha ha.

Funny enough I remember Mr Hunter above who lived in a corner house opposite us!!! small world :-))))

We practically lived there during the school summer holidays. I remember being taught to swim by my Dad - one quick lesson and 'you'll soon get the hang of it'. The man in charge of the place (circa early 1950's) was called Mr Napolean - 'Nappy' we used to call him, always on the lookout for lads sneaking into the girls cabins to have a peek through one of the knot-holes. We'd be sat round the pool smoking (yes smoking) away and when you felt like a swim again you'd stub the fag out in one of the drains!
